Saint-Claude is the highest municipality in the Lesser Antilles (550 meters above sea level) and is best known for its illustrious host, the Soufrière volcano. The inhabitants call it the "Old Lady", somewhat because they consider it a sacred mountain, source of life influencing the climate and nature in general. Located south of Basse-Terre, Saint-Claude covers an area of 34.2 km. It has been gradually transformed into a residential area. The origin of its name dates back to 1858 and to Father Joseph de Saint-Claude, a prominent member of the Jesuit order. It is the only town in Guadeloupe without a coastline
