The commune owes its name to the canal dug to drain the land and provide mooring for boats. Of the 52 sugar mills that existed at the end of the 18thcentury , nothing remains today apart from the remains of a few mills. The peaceful village is bordered to the west by a rather marshy coastline, covered by mangroves, and to the east by numerous coves. To the north are the slave marches and the former slave prison. Small accommodation facilities (chambres chez l'habitat, gîtes) make for a warm and welcoming stay. This small commune stretches from one end of northern Grande-Terre to the other, and boasts a number of beautiful beaches.
