7 km from Pointe-à-Pitre and 10 km from Sainte-Anne, Le Gosier has been able to turn to tourism thanks to the Pointe de la Verdure: its long white sandy beach is home to most of the large hotel complexes as well as the casino. Each hotel has its own beach with free access to the public. Only the facilities (sunbeds, umbrellas) are reserved for guests. The beach of the town with its natural swimming pool as well as the islet Gosier constitute other major assets of this city which shelters very many lodgings of all categories accessible to all the budgets. The city owes its name to the numerous pelicans that could be seen on its coasts already in the 17th century. This sea bird, with a large beak and pocket, is also called "big gullet" and has become the emblem of the city. Due to the incivilities of some residents who complained about their nuisance, the nesting sites of this threatened species have disappeared from the area since 2020.
