The Lamentin owes its name to the famous marine mammal present in the waters of the Grand Cul-de-sac marin until the beginning of the 20th century (despite a different spelling). The history of the commune, due to its geographical position, is closely linked to that of Pointe-à-Pitre. The cane fields and the activities that followed have profoundly marked the region. The agglomeration is located at the intersection of the island's largest economic trade flows. Leaving Pointe-à-Pitre, in the direction of Basse-Terre on the N2, just before Sainte-Rose on the right, the road follows cane plantations that hide a few colonial dwellings.
