Sainte-Marie beach is the presumed landing place of Christopher Columbus on November 4, 1493. A statue of him has been erected at the entrance to Sainte-Marie, north of Capesterre-Belle-Eau. After the abolition of slavery in 1848, Indian workers were hired as laborers on the plantations. Under contract, they took over the work of the former black slaves and settled permanently on the island. The allée Dumanoir features a perfect alignment of royal palms along the road for over 1 km. The first palms were planted around 1850 by the writer Pinel-Dumanoir to mark the boundaries of his property.
