Basse-Terre has seen its economic influence decline in favor of Pointe-à-Pitre. However, it remains the administrative capital of the island, home to the Regional Council, the Departmental Council, the Prefecture, the Law Courts and other important public institutions. After having been a major banana port, the city has developed more modern public infrastructures, some of which date back to the 1930s and are the work of the architect Ali Tur. Basse-Terre has retained a serene atmosphere of a small town where pedestrians who pass you still say hello without knowing you
