Nestled in a valley, Lugarde experienced a period of development at the beginning of the 20th century thanks to its railway station which served the surrounding villages. Today, the station still hosts the terminus of the Gentiane Express tourist train, born of the will of a few rail enthusiasts who maintain a forty kilometer long railway and several old locomotives. The Suc du Chien, the highest point in the commune, the Cantal and Sancy mountains, and the Cézallier are all there for the hiker to see. Every year, in mid-September, the streets of Lugarde come alive for one of the most important garage sales in the region.
