Bourg-Saint-Maurice, a town of 8,000 residents, is frequently referred to as the "Capital of Haute-Tarentaise" thanks to its many winter and summer activities. In winter, winter sports enthusiasts can head to Les Arcs for downhill skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and events such as the Ski World Cup, the French championships in Kilomètre Lancé and ski joëring (harnessed skiing). Summer also offers a variety of activities, including golf, swimming, cycle touring, tennis, mountain biking, archery and mountain hiking, thanks to the town's proximity to major Alpine passes such as Iseran, Roselend and Petit-Saint-Bernard. Bourg-Saint-Maurice is also a key stopover for the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc® (UTMB) and the Trace des Ducs de Savoie (TDS). Water sports enthusiasts can take advantage of the town's international whitewater center, which hosts top-level canoeing and kayaking competitions. The town also offers a wide range of public services, including schools, a collège, a lycée, a hospital, a day nursery, a relay assistante maternelle, a toy library, a media library, a cinema, a residential home, a retirement home, a dynamic community life and a rich heritage. As a former military town, Bourg-Saint-Maurice was home to the 7th Bataillon de Chasseurs Alpins (BCA) for many years.
