Equidistant from Lyon and Saint-Etienne, with its territory split in two by the A47 linking the two cities, Saint-Romain-en-Gier is located in the heart of the Gier valley. The Gier is a river with an unpredictable character, causing a lot of damage to the town during its floods. Saint-Romain-en-Gier has a dozen hamlets in a preserved nature, especially in the part rising towards the Regional Natural Park of Pilat or the mountains of Lyonnais. Some hikes to do around Saint-Romain-en-Gier, especially in the direction of the Combe d'Enfer, with steep slopes, on forest trails to the pastoral plateau of Echalas
