Claude Bernard (1813-1878) was born in Saint-Julien in the Beaujolais region of France, into a modest family of winegrowers. His Introduction to the Study of Experimental Medicine marked a decisive turning point in scientific research and had a colossal impact. After becoming a professor at the Collège de France, he created the chair of experimental physiology at the Sorbonne. Claude Bernard always remained attached to his native land. He bought the manor house next to his parents' farm and came there frequently, only missing the harvest because of the war in 1870! This house has now become the Claude Bernard Museum.
