Lanobre has a population of 1,400. The village lies on a granite plateau that stretches across the Cantal and Puy-de-Dôme departments, bounded to the west by the Dordogne valley and to the south and east by the Rhue river, with the foothills of the Dores volcanic massif to the north. Its modest altitude (630 m) gives this region a harmonious relief of meadows, forests, lakes and rivers. Lanobre, which had been a seigneury since the 13th century, became a commune in 1792. The village boasts two historic monuments: Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur church (12th century) and Val castle (15th century).
