A small, steep village, Montmelas is famous for its château. Originally a stronghold of the Lords of Beaujeu, the property passed through the hands of several families over the centuries, before becoming the property of the d'Harcourt family. Built in the 12thcentury , it has undergone several major alterations, notably in the 19thcentury . However, it still retains many 15th and 16th century features. The most recent restoration work aimed to recreate a medieval fortress. The property is also home to a vineyard. From the signal de Saint-Bonnet, with its Romanesque chapel, the panorama extends over the vineyards and the Saône valley.
