Built on a hillside, on the edge of the Azergues, the village of Lucenay does not resemble its neighbours of the Golden Stones. The buildings are made of white stone: the famous Lucenay stone made of white oolitic limestone. Highly sought-after for luxurious constructions, it was used for the construction of the Saint-Jean de Lyon cathedral and the church of Chazay-d'Azergues. According to some people, Lucenay is named after one of Julius Caesar's freedmen, Licinius, who lived in the first century BC.
