The name Alta Rivoria, used until the 13th century, gives rise to several interpretations, including the country of the high river or the country planted with high oaks. The first mention of this ancient fortified village dates back to 918. It is not known when the ramparts were erected, which in the past surrounded a few houses around the church in an almost circular fashion. Two museums tell the local history. In the surrounding countryside there are many farms with characteristic regional architecture and in the hamlet of Hauteville there is a beautiful old building.
