Beaujeu is the historical capital of the Beaujolais, a region to which the local lords gave their name: Beaujeu-Beaujolais. It was here that the first lord of Beaujeu chose to build his castle of Pierre-Aiguë, a highly strategic location. The first lord of Beaujeu, Berard, is mentioned around 950. A great landowner, he married a pious woman, Vandalmonde, who founded a chapel dedicated to the Virgin. Their son, Humbert I, made a pact with the abbey of Cluny and established the family's fortune. But in 1400, the last lord, Edward II, riddled with debts and without an heir, ceded his fief to Duke Louis of Bourbon.
