Also called corner, ash is a shrub producing fruit that once used to make a drink close to cider. Having many shrubs of this type on its territory, the municipality naturally took the name of Sorbier, the "s" being added a few years later. A former farm village, Sorbiers was small industrialized with the exploitation of lime until the th century, and with the reeling of silk and nail. As in many neighbouring municipalities, the rise came with coal mining in the th century. The coal factories closed their doors in 1968, but the municipality was able to turn to other industrial activities, as evidenced by the numerous companies located on the industrial zone of Vaure. With its 7 500 inhabitants, Sorbiers is located on the water sharing line, in the heart of green hills. Among heritage riches: the church of the village built in the 1870 s with a closed bell of 1597, the Fraisse park and its castle built by trimming factories at the end of the 12 th century and the church Saint-Isidore with its bell carillon.
