One of the most beautiful villages in France lies on the northern slope of the Pilat massif. The Carthusian monastery dates from the 13th century and is wonderfully preserved. It was founded in 1280 at the instigation of a young widow named Béatrice de la Tour, following a vision. The convent functioned, not without difficulty, for five centuries. The first courtyard was devoted to merchant activity: the brothers played a significant economic role at the time. The vaults, the gates and the gardens are authentic. The second courtyard opened onto the monks' cells. Through farming and forestry, the Carthusian monks contributed to the development of agriculture in this poor mountainous region that is the northern slope of the Pilat massif. It was St Bruno who founded the order of the Carthusian fathers in 1084. Occupied by the religious until the Revolution, the monastery and properties were then sold to the local peasants. In an extraordinary way, the villagers did not touch the buildings, making the cells their apartments, thus preserving a unique heritage. So please be discreet and respectful during your visit, possible all year round. It is with pleasure that we have been able to follow these last years, a rehabilitation preserving the spirit of the place and offering a pleasant living space in all seasons.
