Saint-Bonnet-le-Château has 1,600 inhabitants. The town, perched on a promontory, developed in the 13th century around a castle that has since disappeared. In the 14th century, it was fortified and enjoyed a long period of prosperity despite the attacks and pillaging it had to face. In the 19th century, it specialised in locksmithing and armoury, and from 1955 onwards, it added the manufacture of pétanque balls to its know-how. To see: the fortifications, the beautiful private mansions of the 15th and 16th centuries (de Vinols, d'Epinac, Dupuy...), the collegiate church (15th century), the lower chapel (14th century) and, for pétanque enthusiasts, the Obut square.
