The name of the village would come from the Latin expression cellae loci meaning «the place of the monks» referring to the presence of Benedictine monks, previously installed on those lands. However, the name of Cellieu will be fixed only in the th century. The aqueduct of Gier bears witness to the Roman presence. In the Middle Ages, the activity focuses on agriculture. The different cultures belong to some lords in the region. Wheat, oats, rye, potatoes, hemp, vines and fruit trees (apples, cherries) and walnut trees are grown. At the end of the th century, the basement of the commune, rich in minerals, was exploited by mining companies. Today, Cellieu is the place of residence with more than 1 466 inhabitants. Agricultural activity continues with a few farms focusing on the fruit culture, especially cherries. On the last Sunday in June, Cherry Day puts the village in turmoil: artisanal exhibition in the streets of the village, sale of cherries under a big top and tasting of a giant clafoutis.
