The name Chaudes-Aigues is an adaptation of the Occitan Chadasaygas, which was already based on the Latin calentes aquae meaning hot waters. And Chaudes-Aigues lives up to its name, not only with the Par spring, which flows at a European record 82°C, but also with some 30 other hot springs. Volcanoes are just around the corner... As early as Roman times, thermal baths were developed here to relieve rheumatism. Even today, spa-goers enjoy the medicinal virtues of the Caléden spa and the charms of the town at the gateway to Aubrac. But the local inhabitants were also quick to take advantage of this gift of the earth to heat their homes.
