ST. LAWRENCE ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM
Museum preserving the cumulative traces of history, from the origins of Christianity, through the discovery of remains.
The site is housed in the former parish church of Saint-Laurent, one of France's foremost historic monuments. Its Merovingian crypt bears unique witness to the art and architecture of the early Middle Ages.
A major archaeological site, the museum reveals almost two thousand years of the town's history. From the first mausoleums to the 12th-century church, the site has stood the test of time, preserving the cumulative traces of history since the origins of Christianity. By discovering the buildings that succeeded one another from the 4th to the 19th century, as well as the archaeological remains unearthed during excavations carried out between 1978 and 2008, visitors are immersed in a unique retrospective of the evolution of burial practices, beliefs and mentalities.
The memory of the church, the cloister and those who passed through them can now be shared, thanks to spectacular digital technology that enhances the evocative power of the archaeological remains.
The Saint-Oyand crypt. This is one of the rare and most precious vestiges of the early Middle Ages in France! Its sculpted decoration and exceptional state of preservation have made the site famous. The crypt appears in 11th-century texts under the name of a local saint, Eugendus or Oyand, a monk from the Jura region. The first stage of its construction dates back to the early 6th century. In the 7th century, a colonnade was added, with capitals and abacuses decorated with Christian motifs.

Exceptional closures on January 1, May 1 and December 25. Open from Wednesday to Monday from 10am to 6pm. Tuesday from 1pm to 5pm by reservation only. Free of charge. Free visit with the provision of an audioguide in 5 languages (free). Reception staff made aware of the importance of welcoming people with disabilities. Guided tour. Possibility of visits in foreign language and French Sign Language.

A major archaeological site located in one of the oldest districts of the city, the MAG - Grenoble Saint-Laurent Archaeological Museum offers you a journey through nearly two thousand years of history.
The museum presents archaeological remains from the 4th century necropolis to the 19th century church, witnesses of the urban, religious and human history of Grenoble. The site owes its fame to its exceptional 6th century crypt (Saint-Oyand crypt), one of the rare and precious vestiges of the early Middle Ages in France.
Recent work has made it possible to highlight the richness of this architectural ensemble, which is classified as a historical monument. The church and the cloister are highlighted by an original scenography that uses many digital tools to give the archaeological remains all their power of evocation: large format projections, light and sound displays, interactive terminals, audio guides.
Out of the 1500 excavated tombs, nearly 2000 objects, witnesses of the evolution of mentalities and beliefs, have been found. Most of the collections on display are the result of these excavations.
