Surrounded by the Chartreuse, Vercors and Belledonne mountains, the capital of the Dauphiné region is a metropolis focused on the preservation of the environment. For a long time, Grenoble was a stronghold, with the Bastille still one of the city's emblems, but it became an industrial city in the second half of the 19th century. The holding of the Winter Olympics in 1968 marked a high point for the city, which established itself as a true metropolis of the Alps. The city center has two major areas separated by the Isère: the old town (hypercenter and Notre-Dame districts), on the left bank, and the Saint-Laurent district, on the right bank (which is followed by the Bastille, linked to the city by the cable car). In the old town, you can walk through the lively Place Grenette and Place Saint-André, as well as the countless streets with their superb private mansions that criss-cross the district. The bubbles, the famous cable car that goes up to the Bastille, are part of the local landscape and are a must-see during your stay in Grenoble. Numerous guided tours with the tourist office, notably on the theme of street art, very present on the walls of the city, and sustainable development in the numerous eco-districts of the city. Note that it is more pleasant to visit and move around Grenoble on foot, by bike - many lanes and dedicated routes - or by public transport than by car.
