The highest and steepest railway in France, with an arrival and departure station varying in height from 2,372 metres.

The Tramway du Mont-Blanc (TMB) has the distinction of being the highest and steepest railroad in France. Its summer arrival station, the Nid d'Aigle, marks the starting point of the royal road to the 2,372-metre-high Mont Blanc. Inaugurated in 1909, a year after the opening of the Montenvers railroad, the TMB is the valley's other cog railway. From the Saint-Gervais-les-Bains-Le-Fayet departure station (590 m), it covers an altitude difference of almost 1,800 m in just over 1h15. This is your chance to climb to the roof of Europe from the comfort of a seat in one of the train's three carriages, named after the daughters of the TMB's director in 1956: Marie, Jeanne and Anne. Once at the top, you'll be treated to a breathtaking view of the Dômes de Miage, the Aiguilles de Chamonix and the Bionnassay glacier. The complete tour, including all routes, takes around 3h30. A word of advice: in summer, mountain bikes are allowed on the first and last three trains of the day. In winter, the train stops at the Bellevue plateau, at the top of the Les Houches ski slopes. An ingenious idea for ski enthusiasts is to board the TMB from Le Fayet station to the Bellevue plateau (approx. 1 hour), then take the red run down between Bettex and Saint-Gervais for a ski-in, ski-out return. This option is also available for cross-country skiers and snowshoers.

A fuir
