Located at the crossroads of various Roman roads, it is a dynamic place of exchange. Then the city was depopulated until the Middle Ages when it experienced a revival of activity. In 1203, a charter of franchise allows to fix the town. It became a Bourbonnais enclave and a free town. In the Middle Ages, the castellany of Varennes was a walled city, which it kept until the 18th century. Its strategic position leads to its expansion, then it undergoes wars and epidemics. In the 19th century, the arrival of the railroad favoured the trade of animals for slaughter and the development of the furniture industry. In 1937, an air force base is created.
