In the early 10th century, Aymard, Sire de Bourbon, donated Souvigny to Cluny. By the end of the 10th century, a Benedictine priory had been established. After the deaths of the Cluniac abbots Maïeul and Odilon, Souvigny became a center of pilgrimage, with the Sires de Bourbon taking advantage of the priory's power. In the 13th century, Souvigny seems to have been the place of residence of the Bourbons, who, at the end of the 14th century, made the priory their necropolis. Souvigny is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Bourbonnais. In summer, its history is recounted during the "Lumières sur le Bourbonnais" video-mapping shows projected onto the priory.
