Capital of the Drôme and gateway to the South, Valence (population 64,300) lies at the heart of the Rhône valley, overlooking the river, facing the Ardèche and with its back to the Vercors. Valence has the charm of provincial towns that know how to enhance their heritage without denying themselves the benefits of modernity. It's not lacking in assets or audacity. At the foot of the Alps and already a little in Provence, the town unfolds between vineyards and lavender, with markets of sun-drenched fruit and vegetables. Garlic braids and goat's cheese are yours, as are crates of peaches and nectarines. Then there's the charm of old Valence, with its architectural heritage, and the little boutiques of the pedestrian center, like so many nuggets. The pedestrian mall boasts beautiful buildings and chic boutiques that delight fashionistas of all styles and budgets. After a shopping spree, the pleasant terraces invite you for a restorative stopover. On the cultural front, a visit to the beautiful Musée de Valence, with its rich collections and innovative events, and the edifying Centre du Patrimoine Arménien, are a must. On the festive side, the town hosts numerous festivals throughout the year, with free concerts and shows at the Sur le Champ festival, as well as France's only Screenwriters' Festival in April, and numerous Christmas events... And all this under the banner of "Mon cœur Valence", which pulsates from the Champ de Mars.
