Saint-Vallier was designated a Remarkable Heritage Site by the French Ministry of Culture in 2020. This land of the Dauphins was granted a charter of freedom in the 13th century. Then, placed under the domination of the lords of Burgundy, it was given as a dowry on marriage to the Counts of Valentinois... who ceded it to another branch of the family, known as the de Poitiers Saint-Vallier, which died out in the 16th century. While there are still a few well-preserved residences from the Poitiers period, there are few remains of the medieval ramparts and not a single stone from the Franciscan convent founded in the 17th century. Saint-Vallier grew up between two waters. The waters of the Rhône, on the one hand, provided access to a major communication route for exporting goods. Thanks to the waters of the Galaure, on the other, the traditional ceramic and silk industries flourished. Situated on the banks of the Rhône in the north of the département, the town was not spared during the world wars. The Allies missed the bridge over the Galaure and destroyed much of the town. The church and château of Diane de Poitiers miraculously escaped unscathed. This castle, which marks the town's urban landscape, was the birthplace of Diane de Poitiers, future mistress of François I and then Henri II. Now on the wine route, Saint-Vallier is famous for its Thursday morning market, held under a covered market built in 1852.
