At the foot of the Vercors mountains, the Royans cirque has been a place of passage since Roman times. Early on, Saint-Jean-en-Royans specialized in woodworking, and was home to numerous sawmills. The town also opened up to the textile industry, thanks to the flow of water from the Vercors. Woolen sheets, paper and silk thread were produced here. Today, Royans produces walnuts and ravioli. From here, some of the most picturesque footpaths and carriage roads in France climb up to the Vercors plateau. Saint-Jean-en-Royans is the gateway to the Font-d'Urle ski resort and the Nordic areas of the Forêt de Lente and Grand Echaillon.
