This isolated village of around a hundred inhabitants, where a castle was built in the late 11th century, overlooking the Isère valley and offering a magnificent view today, was home to a number of important figures, including Djem, known as Zizim, son of Sultan Mehmet II, the famous conqueror of Constantinople. Rochechinard is also linked to a great family, that of André Horace François de Barral, former musketeer to the King and aide-major to La Fayette. The ruins of the château, the church and the presbytery are well worth a visit. Also worth a visit is the Musée du Royans, which preserves the history of the site and the rural life of yesteryear.
