The town grew up around a monastery founded in the5th century, and took its name from Pourçain, a former slave who became the local abbot. In the 10th century, the priory of Saint-Pourçain took on considerable importance, on which many parishes depended, and the prior was lord of the town. In the 14th century, the town grew thanks to the wine trade. Today, some twenty communes produce AOC wines. The town also celebrates its river, the Sioule. Summer is punctuated by numerous leisure activities on the Ile de la Ronde, where you can camp, and with a festive event: Sioule en Fête.
