12 km north of Valence, along the Rhône, the site has been occupied since Celtic times. For a long time, the inhabitants were mariners, clothiers, farmers and stockbreeders. Thanks to navigation, from the 14th to the 19th century, the little town was an important place for trade and commerce. La Roche-de-Glun changed radically in 1968, when the CNR (Compagnie Nationale du Rhône) built a dam upstream on the Rhône. The village became a peaceful island between the Rhône and the diversion canal, a haven of nature rich in biodiversity. At the time, it had a population of 880. Today it totals 3,500.
