The gateway to the Dieulefit region (12 km away), La Bégude-de-Mazenc, boasts a medieval quarter called Châteauneuf-de-Mazenc, on its hill with cobbled streets and a belfry. This "new" castle dates back to the 13th century and offers a panoramic view over the Valdaine plain. It passed through many hands - Poitiers, Turenne, Dupuy de Montbrun - until it was dismantled in 1622 and a new castle was built further down the hill. The owner was Emile Loubet (1838-1939), a local boy and former President of the French Republic, who was responsible for the development of the new town on the plain around a simple roadside restaurant.
