The highest commune in the département, at an altitude of 930 meters, it is remarkable for the low, domed peat bogs on the Verrerie plateau. In 1662, glassmakers from Lorraine came to settle in Saint-Nicolas. In the Montagne Bourbonnaise, they found the sand, water and fern they needed to make glass, as well as the clay they needed to build their furnaces. For 120 years, they devoted themselves to their art, aided by a large local and Venetian workforce. In the 1990's, Pierre-Yves Blettery decided to create a museum retracing this history - a most interesting visit!
