Set against a backdrop of cliffs, Buis, a charming little town that became Buis-les-Baronnies in 1928, is surrounded by terraced olive groves. In the Middle Ages, Buis was the administrative capital of the Barons of Mévouillon, a town renowned for its wines and cloth. After the great plague of the 14thcentury , Louis XI brought in German-speaking Swiss to repopulate the region, hence the magnificent Bernese-style Place des Arcades. Grapevines gradually gave way to olive groves. With the arrival of the railroads in 1907, the lime tree trade boomed and Buis became the lime tree capital of the world. The Saturday morning Provencal market is a delight!
