In Roman times, Augusta was located on an important communication route, linking the Alps to the Rhone Valley, and was a postal stop between Valence and Die. A huge fresco in honor of the emperor can be seen as you enter the village from Crest. Aouste was successively "visited" by Visigoths, Lombards, Saracens, Normans and Hungarians! For the record, Aouste was the first village in the Drôme to benefit from electricity, in 1894, thanks to a miller. Once a stopover for pilgrims and transhumance, the little town offers a stopover on the road to Saoû or the Vercors, with a shopping area.
