This site, on the right bank of the Rhone, came out of the shadows when the Romans set up the supply center - vivarium - of the city of Alba. Around 475, the episcopal seat of Helvie was transferred there. The Renaissance saw a period of splendor when the bishop Claude de Tournon was chaplain to Queen Anne of Brittany. In the 17th century, the bishops left for Bourg-Saint-Andéol, and a terrible plague epidemic decimated the population. But in the following century, with the return of the bishops, the episcopal palace, current town hall, is built. Go back in time by walking in its narrow and sometimes steep streets.
