Saint-Germain-des-Fossés located about km from Vichy, is a former city of Auvergne, and then Du, is pleasantly situated on a promontory, some kind of spur that advance, to the confluence of the Mourgon and the Allier. His name comes from Saint Germain, the illustrious Bishop of Auxerre. To distinguish it from other agglomerations bearing the same name, the name «of the Ditches» was added. As for the ditches, they were naturally trained by the Allier and the Mourgon, which, on three sides of the city and the castle, defended it. At the time, L'Allier sank at the foot of the castle walls (at the location of the present Notre-Dame Basilica). In the Middle Ages, Saint-Germain comprised two distinct agglomerations: The Priory with the parish church and castle, which today remains only the chapel and rare remains. During the Revolution, Saint-Germain was, for a few years, the head of the third canton of the district of Cusset, and was finally incorporated into the township of Varennes-sur-Allier.
