This small town is one of the gateways to the Haut-Vivarais region. Its hillsides dominate the Rhône valley, with one of the most famous vineyards of the Côtes du Rhône. Here, the grapes ripen to produce Saint-Péray, a dry or sparkling wine with a fine reputation. Two other prestigious AOP wines are also produced here: Cornas and Saint-Joseph. The town is dominated by the ruins of the Château de Crussol, atop its rocky outcrop. It was destroyed in the 15thcentury during the Wars of Religion. It was following this destruction that the inhabitants decided to settle lower down and build the new town of Saint-Pierre-d'Ay, later renamed Saint-Péray. Today, the ruins of Crussol, a historic, medieval and natural site, offer one of the finest panoramas in the region and are a popular excursion destination for locals and tourists alike. The medieval festivals held here in summer have become very popular. There are also a number of cultural and festive events. Such is the case of the friendly In Vino Very Jazz event held at the foot of the château, with stalls selling local wines and gourmet products (mid-July). It's a great opportunity for cross-fertilization of tastings and a fine jazz concert. It's one of those convivial, joyful moments for which Saint-Péray is famous. This dynamic little town is sure to be a warm and tasty stopover. Stock up on fresh produce and vitamins at the local producers' store. And don't forget to visit the Maison des Vins et du Tourisme, where you're guaranteed to fall in love!
