Perched at an altitude of 1,000 m, Saint-Etienne-de-Lugdarès developed on a plateau at the end of "hills" coming from the plain and at the crossroads of important mule tracks. The decline of the communication routes through the Tanargue and the rural exodus which severely affected the slopes of this massif have reduced Saint-Etienne-de-Lugdarès to a small village which nevertheless continues to hold its role as a town in the centre of a region whose quality of life and rurality are new development factors. You should know that it was here that the famous Beast of Gévaudan, which spread terror in the mountainous regions, made its first victim on June 30, 1764..
