The volcanoes located on the territory of the commune belong to the province of the "Jeunes Volcans d'Ardèche", one of the two youngest volcanic areas of the Massif Central with that of the chaîne des Puys. With the suc de Bauzon, which dominates the village from its 1 471 m, three other volcanoes are part of the history of the valley. They are the suc de la Gravenne, culminating at 806 m, and the maars (craters) of the Ferrand lake, Chambon and the Vestide du Pal. This last one is one of the biggest craters in Europe, with a cavity of 1700 m in diameter and 150 m deep. Montpezat is home to an underground hydroelectric power station connected to the national grid.
