The town was named after Joyeuse, the name of Charlemagne's sword that was lost while passing through. One of his soldiers found it and as a reward the Emperor had a castle built and gave the place and the soldier's family the name of Joyeuse. At the mouth of the Cevennes, Joyeuse has seen a lot of industrial activity over the last two centuries, linked to sericulture and tanning. In the Grande-Rue, don't miss some beautiful mansion facades and the goulajous, small passages from the upper town to the districts below.
