Aubenas is a small commercial town of about 12,000 inhabitants. Its position between the plain and the mountains has always been an important asset. Perched on a limestone rock that dominates the middle valley of the Ardèche, it has experienced rapid prosperity since the 13th century. The Barons of Montlaur ruled the town from 1084 to 1441 and built the keep, the surrounding wall and the round towers of the castle. The Montlaur family was responsible for the economic development of the town, but also for improving the living conditions of its inhabitants. Follow the route set up by the municipality to discover the points of interest in the old town.
