In Gallo-Roman times, Montmarault was already the crossroads for the southern part of the department. Today, Montmarault is still a major crossroads, linking major towns from the northeast on the RCEA-RN145 linking Strasbourg to Bordeaux, from south to northwest on the A71 with two direct access roads linking Clermont-Ferrand to Paris, and from east to west on the RD2371-RD46 linking Vichy to Montluçon. In the 19thcentury , it was already a small town, surrounded by a large wall and protected by a château built on the upper part of the Place d'Armes. Today, it is part of the Commentry-Montmarault-Néris Communauté, a group of 33 communes with the Village Étape label.
