Nested on a bulge of the Dombes plateau, Pérouges does not usurp its membership in the club of the Most Beautiful Villages of France. A medieval village par excellence, Pérouges is one of the must-see places for tourism in the Ain. As a result, it is inevitably crowded in the summer, which takes away some of the charm of the old cobbled streets where you would think you were plunged, on a gray and rainy weekday evening, into a Middle Ages all rattling with the sounds of hooves and armor. Most of the buildings date back to the end of the 15th century and if the city experienced a certain decline in the 19th century, the work undertaken by the Committee for the Preservation of the Old Perugia has given it back all its splendor. Since then, stores, houses, inhabitants: all take care of this postcard decor. Moreover, Pérouges has been used as a backdrop for several films. To grasp the atmosphere of the city, it is necessary to stroll in the old streets and to sit at a terrace on the place of the Lime tree, heart of the village. If you leave Pérouges with a head full of beautiful images, you will also leave with a full belly thanks to the famous sugar cake, a local specialty not to be missed. The road of the medieval city is covered with round pebbles. It is therefore advisable to wear shoes that are as comfortable as possible and to avoid all shoes with heels. Strollers and people in wheelchairs will find it very difficult to move around. To park, several obligatory and paying parking lots surround the old town
