A lively museum in Montluçon with a fine collection of musical instruments and several fun rooms.

Nestled in the heart of the medieval city, this living museum can be visited by the whole family in any direction you like. It is a bubble of emotions perceived through a forgotten voice, a sequined costume or a concert poster. On the first level, the instrumental tour awaits you, with collections of acoustic and electric guitars, accordions and drums, with a set of hand-played world percussion instruments available for free access. On the second level, the musical path, composed of playful rooms, that of the rural world with its big bell and the snake, that of the brass bands with the banners of the Harmonie de Montluçon bal musette and its limonaire, that of the electric turn and its scopitone, then the era of the pop and its wall of vinyls and that of the Eighties and its crocodile room. On the third level is the collection of hurdy-gurdies with the Pajot luthiers' workshop, and bagpipes with the Lestrade workshop. There are more than 3,500 instruments, an impressive collection of guitars including the Selmer, the Trust guitar and the first Gibson electric guitar, hurdy-gurdies including the great Bourbonnaise and the Gilbert Malochet, and also a 1920 drum set, the oldest bagpipe in the world. These well-documented ensembles are precious ethnological evidence of musical practices. Equipped with headphones and a joystick, point to the items on display. You can then listen to music or watch films. The Machine Room is dedicated to new digital practices, organized in four interconnected installations, an interactive experience where lights, images, sensors and vibrations are combined with sound, it's up to you to play! Independent of the permanent musical and instrumental tours, a modular volume on the ground floor is dedicated to temporary exhibitions. You can also use the premises and rent the conference room to organise meetings or events. The museum organizes birthday parties outside the school holidays. The programme includes a discovery workshop with a free visit, and an admission ticket for each participating child. Drinks are provided, cakes and sweets are brought by the parents. The museum's mediators compete in ideas to awaken young and old to the world of music by listening to pieces, discovering and analysing sounds and instruments. MuPop is the big box of memories!
