Montluçon's strategic location led the Dukes of Bourbon to equip the town with extensive defensive systems, including walls nearly two meters thick, flanked by forty towers and preceded by wide ditches. In 1527, the sovereign duchy of Bourbon was attached to the crown, and Montluçon became a royal châtellenie. In the mid-19th century, the first metallurgical plants, blast furnaces and forges were built on either side of the Cher. With the completion of the Canal de Berry, the town experienced unprecedented urban development. Stroll through the medieval town and visit MuPop.
