The canton of Marcillat was born of administrative reform, divided between the departments of Puy-de-Dôme, the Creuse and the Allier, and corresponds to the Lignes bourbonnaise. After some changes to these limits, it is made up of the thirteen communes of the old medieval parishes of the ancient medieval parishes, usually designated by the term Pays country.
