Ambérieux, a commune on the Dombes plateau, is easy to spot as it is dominated by a red brick keep, the remains of a medieval castle, a veritable beacon of the commune, watching over some 220 ponds. The castle was built from 1370 onwards, of which the three original towers and a keep visible for miles around from its promontory remain today. Tours are organized by the Friends of the Heritage of Ambérieux-en-Dombes. A walking tour of 7 km, about 2 hours, can discover the castle, the many ponds, including a communal fishing pond, and horses very present on the territory.
