This is one of the most beautiful villages in the Vaucluse. It owes this as much to its old stones as to its harmonious landscape. Perched on a steep rock, it faces the ancient Roman road. Venasque saw the founding of the Comtat Venaissin, and has preserved its heritage and monuments, such as the baptistery. At the end of the 6th century, the bishop of Carpentras, Saint Siffrein, having chosen the village as his episcopal see, had this marvellous sanctuary built on the foundations of an early Christian edifice. The village was protected by a powerful medieval wall, of which only three towers and a fortified gate remain.
