The town's rise to prominence began on April 22, 1561, when Charles IX united all the fiefs owned by the Seigneur d'Agoult with the Barony of Sault and made it a County. In 1613, on the death of Chrétienne d'Aguerre, widow of François d'Agoult, the Comté de Sault passed from the d'Agoult family to that of Créquy-Lesdiguières. It subsequently passed to Louis Nicolas de Neufville, Duc de Villeroy, in 1703. On June 25, 1793, the Convention created the Department of Vaucluse, comprising Avignon, the Comtat Venaissin, the Principality of Orange, the Viguerie d'Apt and the County of Sault en Provence. Today, Sault is a Station Verte de Vacances.
